Below are the steps I took to get a VRRP & EIGRP Network running on Gns3. I was using the following tools:
- C3640 Jk9o3s Mz 124 16 Bin Enclosure
- C3640 Jk9o3s Mz 124 16 Bin Salman
- C3640 Jk9o3s Mz 124 16 Bin Enclosure
- C3640 Jk9o3s Mz 124 16 Bin Khattab
- C3640-jk9o3s-mz.124-16.bin
- Gns3 V 1.3.13
- IOS version c3640-jk9o3s-mz.124-16a
- Windows 7 host computer
When I download and extract it, and try opening the GNS3 file I get an error: 'The image C3640-JK.BIN is missing' The web page says this: IOS: c3640-jk9o3s-mz.124-16.bin. In my GNS3 I have the file: c3640-jk9o3s-mz.124-16.image. Download C3640 Jk9O3S Mz.124 16.Bin uploaded at SaveShared.com™, file hash 0a16c124f89e9db3c260e3b40a13696e, file size 12.88 MB and last modified on 2011-05-28 11. C3640-jk9s-mz.124-16.bin Ios Download. C3640-jk9s-mz.124-16.bin Ios Download C3640-jk9s-mz.124-16.bin Ios Download, isigncloud account 5d37863c16.
The first step was to get switch functionality running on Gns3. To do this, I used the following steps:
a. On the running Gns3 instance, I navigate to Edit-> Preferences-> Dynamips -> IOS routers and clicked on the new button.
b. Select new IOS image. You need cisco 3600 IOS image IOS c3640-jk9o3s-mz.124-16a (33MB) and it can be obtained from this link (http://www.w7cloud.com/GNS3-IOS/c3640-Gns3%20IOS%20for%20switch.bin).
c. Click on apply then OK button and then the NEXT button. You can type its name and set a suitable RAM value for it but it will generally auto fill the fields with the appropriate values.
d. Set the network adapter as where you need to define NM-16ESW on slot 0. Next set the Idle PC value for the router and finish the wizard. This is a very important step. After this step your configuration should be as shown below.
e. Come up with the following network on Gns3, using the pallet on the left hand side.
f. In my case, while trying to connect to the switch interface 1, I received the error below:
I just used another interface.
g. On Router1, run the following commands to enable VRRP.
h. On R2, run the following commands to enable VRRP on the device.
i. The following commands will be to enable EiGRP. First is to assign IP’s to the out-going ports on R1, R2 and R3.

j. The next step is the EiGRP configuration on all the 3 switches as shown below:
On R1
On R2

On R3
k. To configure the IP’s for PC1 and PC2, run the following commands.
l. Start all the nodes now by selecting the Play button on Gns3 taskbar.
m. Check the VRRP status on R1. You should get output as shown below:
n. Check the VRRP status on R2.
o. To test the VRRP functionality, stop R1 on Gns3. Check the output on R2. You will get output as indicated below.
From PC2, ping PC1.
From PC1, ping PC2
p. Remember to save all the configurations.
